We took his little hand and gently petted each dog while saying the word, "gentile" very softly. After a while, our son would go up to the dogs by himself and pet them softly, while saying, "gentle." Keep repeating that word to them and eventually they will understand! And I agree; saying "no, no, no!," doesn't teach them anything.
