It’s Our Prerogative… by Elizabeth Allen

What mother of a teenage daughter doesn’t like to be addressed as “her older sister”? Granted, the comment is usually delivered by some sleazy salesman as he attempts to close a sale or a just-pubescent waiter fishing for a larger tip, but still, it feels nice.

I find the older I get, the less selective I’ve become regarding the source of the compliments. I will gladly allow my morale to be boosted and my ego stroked by just about anyone from any walk of life or gender – with the possible exception of homeless people (although there was that one guy who looked remarkably like a scruffy Gerard Butler as he gulped his Mad Dog…)

The fact is, younger mothers probably get mistaken for their kids’ sisters all the time and take the faux pas for granted, while we more seasoned moms recognize that very narrow window and struggle to squeeze through for as long as possible.

CUE: hair color, face lifts, Botox, anti-wrinkling cream, or any one of a plethora of youth-mimicking devices or applications. Okay, I’ve only succumbed to coloring over my gray but I hail from a family of women who were no strangers to cosmetic surgery. That doesn’t mean I intend to follow their footsteps, in fact, I don’t want a face so tight you could bounce a dime off of. (Joan Rivers and Donatella Versace come to mind…ugh!) It would be fun though to hear some young man whisper under his breath “what a cougar” at me and not directed at a ’67 Mercury.

I’m not trying to look as young as my daughter; if I want to feel 16 again I’ll wait for senility to kick in. And for the most part, I’m pretty okay with the aging process. I had my fun before becoming a mother and contrary to Mr. Shaw’s quote, I did not waste my youth. All things considered, I don’t exactly have one foot in the grave, but who says we have to look like it?

I’ll keep flirting until someone says, “Is there something in your eye?”

It's funny how other's look at women and make age judgements when they would never do that with a man!

What I found funny recently was a comment from a 5 year-old boy I barely knew. I tend to look at least several years younger than my actual age. Here was this 5 year-old who asked, "Are you Brandon's Mom or his Grandma?" I was stunned, although I did chuckle. The humorous part was that his mother had 3 other children with the oldest being a young teen. This little boy's mother absolutely looked my age or older and here was her son asking if I was my son's Grandmother! As the saying goes..."out of the mouths of babes..."

Indeed, mothers should always have a time to pamper herself and do whatever she wants to reward herself. And if that involves self-beautification, then she's free to do that. The issue is not about going to a plastic surgeon Orange County for cosmetic enhancement. I think this becomes a problem when the mom starts neglecting her children for her sake.

I support you with that! With the popularity of plastic surgery that it had gotten, attitudes have changed as well. Lesser people are growing older gracefully, while more and more are accepting the cosmetic surgery alternative.

I agree as well. It is not about the mother consulting a Long Island plastic surgery clinic for beauty. It is her prerogative to avail these beauty treatments as long as she provides for her children first.

You have a bright insight about aging and I got so inspired. It's my fear to get old and as early as now, I'm making a list of things I'll get at Long Island plastic surgery clinic. Now I think I don't need taht anymore. Thank you for the inspiration.

You have raised some very interesting points. The advantages of plastic surgery sure would lure you to change the way you feel and look! However, take the decision wisely and not just for the heck of looking brand new.

Sometimes, feeling young and vibrant would vibrate on the outside. You may not need a Los Angeles plastic surgery anymore if you become happy and bubbly all the time because it will surely radiate on the outside.

Looking younger is not necessarily a bad thing. Neither is getting plastic surgery. The only thing to keep in mind is to thoroughly think about what you're doing and not overdo things.

Great insights. Also keep in mind that not every surgery is successful, and unlike most “medically necessary” medical procedure, the success rate of plastic surgery is quite subjective. oceanside urgent care

Organized by Thailand's famed Tiffany's Show, the pageant invites transsexuals and transvestites from all over the world to participate. The rules state that entrants must be born male and be a transvestite or transgender (pre and post-op competitors are welcome, though proof of natural gender may be requested in form of a birth certificate or doctor's genetic verification).

After a tough week of competition that concluded Friday night, South Korea's Mini was crowned Miss International Queen 2010, ahead of first runner-up Ami Takeuchi of Japan and second runner-up Stasha Sanchez of the United States.

Really, it's not surprising the prize went to a South Korean. The nation's culture is omnipresent in Bangkok already, from fashion and music to food and soap operas. Check out some of the pageant highlights in the above gallery.
