ROBIN'S SHOW REVIEW: The Flying Karamazov Brothers

My son enjoyed the zany antics and quirky chemistry of The Flying Karamazov Brothers (they're not really brothers).

This jazz-playing, cleaver-throwing foursome, headed by Paul Magid, present an eclectic mixture of music, comedy, dance and juggling, and work hard to amuse. Whether ably juggling pins at rapid speed, even in the dark, or bouncing balls rhythmically under a table, they create their own mad-capped style of entertainment.

The Minetta Lane Theatre is homey and a good setting for this troupe.  The stage was intriguely covered in cardboard boxes piled to the ceiling.  From the get go, you wondered what would come of them, and not much did, other than them destroying some and moving others around, but it was quite a sight, and you imagined the lengths they went to set that up.

Throughout the show they gather and display "Terror Objects" (a meat cleaver, a lit torch, an egg, a bottle of Andre Champagne, etc.) which are ultimately successfully and impressively juggled by the quartet.  It was quite a feat.

You are invited to bring objects to the theater for the Karamazovs to keep airborne in a real, live challenge that ends either with a pie in the face or a standing ovation, making each show a new experience and sometimes a messy one!  In our case, there was no pie, and I must admit, it was exciting (if not gross) to see the character Demetri juggle the objects voted on by the audience....a curved walking cane, dead eel (yes...really....yuck) and large chocolate santa.

At the end, they hang out in the theatre to meet 'n greet.  My senior dad, who attended with us, got a kick out of conversing with them.  They asked his ancestry, and when he said his parents were from Russia, their interest perked up, even though their names are not really Karamazov.  LOL.
